Reports, studies and manuals in your firm's terminology.

The same approved terms as your specs and drawings, in every report, study and manual.

01

One project, many documents

A project produces far more than specs and drawings: geotechnical and environmental studies, design reports, operation and maintenance manuals, health and safety plans. Each one usually goes to whoever is available (often a bilingual engineer between other tasks), and each one comes back with its own word for the same component. Your engineers then correct terms in documents they did not expect to review, and stop trusting any translation they receive. Sooner or later, a report that names a component two ways reaches the client. A component should have one name, whichever document it appears in.

02

One term base behind all of them

Every document we translate for your firm uses the same approved term base as your specs and drawings. The rock anchor in the geotechnical report is the rock anchor in the specification and on sheet S-201, in both languages. Your engineers read the report for its content, not its vocabulary. The terms were approved once, before the first document, and checked once more before delivery. Six of the world’s ten largest engineering firms are Technitrad clients, and our specialist review is carried out under ISO 17100 and ISO 18587.

What we translate

  • Reports and studies: geotechnical, environmental and impact studies, feasibility and design reports.
  • Construction documents: submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, tender documents and contracts.
  • Operation and maintenance manuals, and the training that goes with them.
  • Health and safety: safety plans, procedures and safety data sheets.

Proof on a deadline

For Worley’s Iqaluit and Pond Inlet harbour studies, we translated 420 pages of marine, geotechnical and environmental studies and 45 AutoCAD drawings into French in 14 days, and the studies went out with the Government of Nunavut’s tender on schedule. Read the case study.

FAQ

Questions

What is technical translation?

Translation of documents whose meaning depends on exact terms: specifications, studies, manuals, safety data sheets, software. A general translation can read well and still be wrong, because one technical term carries a requirement that a near synonym does not.

What is a CAT tool used for?

A computer-assisted translation tool splits a document into segments, shows the translator earlier translations of similar segments from the translation memory, and flags the approved term for each word in the term base. It keeps a long document, or a set of documents, consistent.

What is translation memory?

A database of past translations, stored sentence by sentence, so the same sentence is translated the same way the next time. It is the companion of the term base: the memory keeps sentences consistent, the term base keeps terms consistent.

Can you translate documents that are only scans?

Yes. Older studies often exist only as scanned PDFs; in the Iqaluit and Pond Inlet project some dated from the 1970s and were barely legible. Scans take more preparation, so they are quoted separately.
